For this project, I developed a user journey, a series of steps that represents a scenario in which a user might interact with the solution in order to accomplish a goal. They tell a story of the overall user experience (with & without technology), including what happens before, during, and after the use of your solution

SARAH - TEACHER

Sarah needs to plan a field trip to the Zoo for her fourth-grade class. She revises her lesson plans. 

She opens the ZooMate app and chooses a grade from the main menu choices

Sarah customizes the four-grade plan to fit her curriculum

She finishes her customizing the zoo tour and buys the tickets for her and the whole class using her phone

Sarah gathers her students and gives them instructions for the zoo field trip

She goes to the zoo with her students. She gets to the entrance. There is no need to wait in line to buy the tickets because she already bought them using the app

Once Sarah and her students are at the entrance, she uses her phone to scan all the tickets

Once inside the zoo she guides her student using the field trip tour app feature

LAURA - MOTHER

Laura is with her three girls. She got already inside the zoo

She has specific places in mind she wants to visit. Laura opens the ZooMate app

Laura goes to maps and finds the lion's exhibit

She activates the "go to this exhibit" feature

Laura listens to the directions and follows the visual cues on her screen

On her way to the Lion's exhibit, Laura gets a notification that in 10 minutes there will be a showtime. 

She discusses with her girls if they want to take a detour. All agree the show time will be nice to see

Laura activates the direction to the showtime and they get there on time to enjoy the show

BEN - STUDENT

Ben has a college research to do. He thinks that he can get some of this information at the zoo. He also doesn't want to take too long visiting the Zoo.

Ben finds out that ZooMate can help him navigate the zoo and find the information he needs efficiently

Ben decides to visit the Zoo and downloads the app

The next day he gets in his car and goes to the zoo

Once he is there he purchases the ticket at the entrance. He gets an alert in the ZooApp that says he can enter the Zoo by scanning the QR code at the entrance

He finds the Lion's exhibit on the map and goes to it by following the instructions

He gets to the exhibit and sees the sign with the written information about the animal. He also sees a barcode and scans it with the zoo app

Once scanned he listens to a detailed information about the animal he is looking at

DESIGN PRINCIPLES

USER NEEDS

The following are user needs that came out of the interviews. User needs will influence the design of the different parts of the zoo app.   

  • Laura expects to browse the animal exhibit choices available to her so she can pick the Lion's exhibit 

  • Sarah wants to choose a grade-appropriate field trip plan suggested to her so she can take her students through a guided zoo tour

  • Ben wants to scan the exhibit's bar code so he can listen more about the animal he is looking at

  • Laura expects to get an alert saying that an exhibit is closed for reparation so she can avoid wasting time going to visit it

  • Sarah wants to buy tickets the day before her visit to the zoo so that she doesn't have to wait in line with her students when she gets to the zoo

  • Ben expects to get alerts while he is nearby a new exhibit so that he won't miss seeing the new additions

  • Laura needs to get step-by-step visual directions from where she is to her destination so that she won't get lost trying to find it herself

  • Ben expects to get alerts on food discounts from restaurants in the zoo so that he can save money

  • Sarah expects to customize her class field-trip so she can tailor it to the class needs

  • Laura needs to get an alert about the feeding times so she won't miss them

  • Ben wants to share with his friends a cool animal fact he found by scanning the exhibit's QRC bar so that his friends can be encouraged to learn more about conservation

  • Laura expects to find an updated schedule tab so she can plan her visit

  • Laura expects to get alerts to shows so that she won't miss them

  • Sarah wants to reserve a picnic area/tables so when it is lunchtime she won't have to struggle to find a place to have lunch with her students.

  • Ben wants to purchase his lunch using the app so that he won't have to wait in line at the restaurant

  • Laura needs to find rest areas so that her family can relax for a while

  • Sarah needs to locate bathrooms quickly so that she can get to them quickly

  • Ben wants to add his own voice comments about the animal he is looking at so that he can recall later why that animal seemed so special to him

  • Laura wants to see quickly where exactly she is at the zoo in relation to other points of interest so that she can orient herself in case she wants to deviate from her main plan

  • Sarah wants to browse a list of animals with summarized information plus an interesting fact about them so that she can share with her students

Design Principles

These principles will create a consistent experience across the zoo app. They will guide the interaction, visual, and content design decisions that are specific to the ZooMate app.

  1. Audible instructions and descriptions
    The app will give audible step-by-step instructions to get to exhibits and audible descriptions of these exhibits

  2. One-handed layout 
    The user should be able to interact with the app one-handed. Most users that go to the zoo go with children, especially small ones. They need to have a free hand accessible to take care of kids

  3. 6th-8th grade reading level
    The level of reading/listening covers the user demographics that most frequently visit the zoo, adults with children, and young adults 

  4. A personal guide 
    It will take the user to the destination and offer suggestions for alternative activities  

  5. Large graphics and buttons
    Users should be able to identify what they are looking at in one glance. The idea is to keep the eyes off the screen and enjoying the wildlife 

  6. Comprehensive and accessible zoo directory 

Just like a paper map, this app will have all places of interest easily accessible.
