RESEARCH

This is the primary research where I asked questions to my audience about their experiences with zoo printed maps as well as zoo mobile apps. This research will give a clear idea of how an app could enhance the experience and lessen the frustration of visiting a zoo. The vast majority of the response to these questions were obtained via Google Forms due to the current situation with COVID 19.

The questionnaire has only The expectation is to confirm the need for a zoo app that will act as a campus guide, knowledge bank, events announcer, and planning to visit tool.

The goal of this interview is to find out if zoos can benefit from a zoo app that can have more comprehensive and current information than a printed map. Also, can zoo apps enhance the experience of a visitor?

Introduction/Warm-Up

At one point or another, we have gone to the zoo and have picked up one of those masterpiece printed maps. Maybe you are collecting them. These are not just maps. They also have other valuable information such as showtimes. Also, many zoos have their own mobile apps that have replaced these maps. I will ask you a few questions about your personal experience while visiting the zoo.

QUESTIONNAIRE SUMMARY

Question 1

  • The style of their design and illustration. The quality of the paper. The size of their text. The size of the paper

  • Bathrooms and drinking fountains locations

  • I can see the location of where all the different animals are on the map

Have you used any zoo apps? If yes.  What were some of the features that you like?

  • Most people answered, no.

  • GPS - a button that says 'read more' about some events - Pre-order tickets - e-ticket - Discount (If they have)

Question 2

What didn't you like about the paper maps that you got during your zoo visits? Write as many details as you can come up with.

  • The paper is too big. I don't like to fold the paper. It will look 'second hand' or 'old' or 'not pretty any more' to me. The text is too small to read

  • Easily lost, crumpled.

  • They are usually too large to carry in your pocket. They can get wet easily.

  • Print too small. 

  • Hard to follow and doesn't show close exhibits

What were some of the features you didn't like in the zoo app?

  • No worth the download because if it's infrequent use.

Imagine you are walking through the zoo with a zoo app, What kind of features would you love to see in a zoo app? Put as many as it comes to your mind

  • GPS - Event list and timing and price - Bathroom Location - Restaurant Location (and the reviews, menu, pricing) - Gift shop Location - The timing of each waiting line - Place to rest - Audio of each animal's information

  • Dates for exhibits that are rotating or changing so that I know whether to look for those on this trip or skip them and see them next time.

  • Live information about popular times (aka what's the busiest hour) so that, I know how long I expect to wait in line

  • featured exhibits, interactive exhibits, best times to view specific animals

  • Feeding times would be great, along with showtimes. Menus (along with allergy information) for the restaurants and concessions stands

INTERVIEWS

Laura - MOTHER

Between 30-40

Laura is a mother of 3 girls. She loves to take her girls to the zoo and instruct them as they walk through it

  • She likes how printed maps display the animal pictures and their names, and bathroom locations

  • What she dislikes about printed maps is the lack of showtime schedules and feeding information

  • If she had a zoo app, the would like to see showtimes feeding times, general and specific information about the animals, and what are the best times to see them

  • It would be great for laura if the zoo app had information in audio and an audio tour guide.

  • Updated information about exhibits

  • Regarding visuals, she would like to see a combination of photographs and illustrations to make the app more interesting â€‹

Sophie - TEACHER

Between 20-30

Sophy is less than a year married and is an elementary school teacher. When springtime comes, she takes her students to the zoo

  • The information that she appreciates most on printed maps is the directory of animals, and show information

  • What she doesn't like about printed maps is that sometimes they don't include all the animals, so when she tries to find a specific animal, she can figure it where it is located

  • If she had an app, she would love to get showtime alerts, have an animal directory that she could select from

  • An interactive map that could sense your location and give you information on the animals nearby based on your location.

  • Other features that she would love to see in an app are:

    • ​Information about restaurants in the zoo or any other concession stands

    • Audio and written information about an exhibit

    • Let you know if an exhibit is closed or under construction

    • Let you create a schedule - especially useful for field trips - or maybe some preset field trip guides

  • Regarding visual content, she thinks illustrations do the job

  • As a teacher, she would love to have an app assist her to plan ahead. The app must be fast and easy to use so she can't be glued to her phone on a field trip
